The RM of Hanover is working hard to resolve water discolouration issues that have been popping up in Kleefeld.

According to the municipality, it is a well-known fact that Kleefeld uses a water supply that is high in iron and at times this can result in staining and discolouration or 'yellowing' of the water. These discolouration events have increased significantly over the last few weeks as demand on the water distribution system has tripled on peak days. A number of residents have expressed their concerns.

The municipality put out a statement on Wednesday addressing the ongoing issues, noting their operations department is well aware of the concerns and is working diligently to eliminated these discolouration events.

Apparently, the challenging factor is that the water passes the daily clarity and disinfection requirements when leaving the water plant, however, they are still noticing instances of discolouration that can be very random in both timing and location downstream in the system.

Hanover's utility operators are working with a Consultation of Drinking Water Specialist and they will be making adjustments over the next week within the water plant. This will include adjusting some reservoir capacities, pump start frequencies, and dosage rates and they expect the changes will decrease and hopefully eliminate these discolouration issues.

The RM asks Kleefeld residents to be patient as they adjust to the new flow rates, but they also ask residents to contact them if further discolouration is noticed or even if a significant improvement is noticed.

And finally, the municipality assures residents that this is not a safety concern or a water supply issue. The water is well within the disinfection guidelines, but the high iron at times be displeasing aesthetically. The utility operations department will continue to work hard to minimize discolourarion.
