Council for the Rural Municipality of Hanover has approved nearly $600,000 worth of tenders related to fire protection.

Hanover Fire Chief Paul Wiebe says council has awarded the tender for construction of a new fire rescue truck for New Bothwell. Acres Emergency Vehicles was the low bid among three firms at $374,773.30. That is about $7,000 under budget. Wiebe explains their current truck is nearing 20 years of age.

According to Wiebe, rescue trucks normally last between 20 and 25 years. He notes their existing truck was built in the late 1990's and safety requirements have changed since then. Though it is still legal to drive, Wiebe says it has its limitations.

It is expected the truck will arrive in about ten months. Once they take possession, Wiebe says they will either try to sell the existing one or repurpose it for some other area within the municipality.

Council also awarded a tender for the site development at the new Blumenort Fire Hall. Wiebe says weather permitting, he is hoping to get started in early May. Fast Brothers Ltd was the lowest of four bids for site development at $223,810.12. According to Wiebe, the municipality had budgeted about $267,000.

Site development includes building a driveway and getting the land ready for construction of the fire hall.
