The Reeve for Hanover calls it a very productive weekend.

Stan Toews is referring to Hanover's strategic planning session held this past weekend. This is something they do every other year. Toews says on the agenda was selecting five strategic plan points for council to focus more attention on.

One of those priorities is Recreation Facility Renewal. Toews notes Hanover will continue to work towards local and regional recreation facility renewal. A feasibility study has been done concerning the need for new recreation facilities in the municipality. Options include building a new arena in Grunthal, a community centre in Blumenort or renovating the arena in Mitchell. Toews notes a decision has not yet been made.

"It could be made shortly, it's hard to say," says Toews. "But discussions will be ongoing."

Another priority is Solid Waste Management. Toews notes Hanover will continue to provide sustainable and innovative solid waste management, including recycling and composting services. He says when it comes to recycling and composting, this has become a priority.

"I think for every pound of waste that we can keep out of the landfill it's cheaper for the Hanover residents," he says.

Another priority is Economic Development. Toews says Hanover will endeavor in the development of industrial development policies and incentives, through the Hanover Community Development Corporation.

A fourth priority is Surface Water Management. The Reeve notes Hanover will study new policies and programs to provide more efficient global drainage improvement options.

And finally, Water and Sewer Utility Renewal is a priority.

"We will start committing resources to ensure efficient utility infrastructure renewals are done in time so that they don't all of a sudden give us a big surprise," notes Toews. "We have some old pipes and stuff in the ground, so we have to start looking at those."

According to Toews, the strategic priority plan still needs to be adopted by council.
