Council for the Rural Municipality of Hanover has identified two roads this year to see improvements under its Municipal Road Reconstruction Capital Program.

Reeve Stan Toews says if the funding is there, they would like to do some extensive asphalt patching along Road 32N or Ridge Road from Provincial Road 216 to Highway 12. They would also like to rebuild Road 34N or Hanover Road from Road 30E to 31E.

The estimated cost of each project is $325,000. Toews says completion of the work is contingent on provincial funding. He notes in years past, the municipality typically gets a total of $400,000 for this program. If Hanover were to get that amount this year, it would use federal gas tax money to pay the remaining portion.

With Hanover Road needing a complete rebuild, Toews says it is difficult to know whether they will have the same problems as last year when they dug up McKenzie Avenue. Hanover originally budgeted $325,000 for that project. But, shortly after crews began work, they realized very poor sub soil conditions underneath. In fact, Works and Operations Manager Wes Fehr stated that road was built overtop a bog back in the day. As a result, that soil needed to be removed from the roadbed. The final cost of the project was approximately $471,000.

Toews notes if both these projects proceed as planned, they would like to complete the work in June or July.
