The Rural Municipality of Hanover has slapped a fine on Boyd Penner.
Penner owns three subdivided duplex lots along Peters Lane in Mitchell. Five years ago, he obtained permits for the structures but the permits indicated the basements were unfinished.
Hanover administration has noted that after being unable to sell the three units, Penner decided to construct basement suites in each unit for the purpose of rental. However, no permits were obtained for this construction.
Last month, Hanover council made the decision that by December 31st of this year, all of the tenants must move out of those basement suites, even though Penner's lawyer had suggested a five-year deadline.
Reeve Stan Toews says council has now ordered Penner pay a penalty of $687.70. Toews says the penalty amount is how much Penner owes in taxes from those suites. He must pay the penalty within thirty days.
Once the basement suites are empty, Penner will be forced to convert each home back to a regular duplex.
