The Reeve for Hanover says council is concerned with how tannerite is being used recreationally in the municipality.

Tannerite can be purchased in small quantities for use in target practice. Stan Toews says each year they hear complaints from residents.

(Hanover Reeve Stan Toews)"People are putting large amounts together and causing some big explosions," he says. "This upsets neighbours and probably livestock as well."

He recalls earlier this spring hearing from a resident near Pansy who said a nearby tannerite explosion was so severe it caused pictures to fall off the walls in his home.

According to Toews, it is not illegal to purchase tannerite. However, council is looking at whether they could establish a bylaw which restricts the use.

"We have to get a lot more information to see what we can and cannot enforce before we do anything," he says.

Ward Six Councillor Henry Funk suggested the municipality not create a bylaw it can not enforce. While Ward Three Councillor Bob Brandt suggested they should keep the matter under provincial or federal jurisdiction and not get involved.
