Council for the Rural Municipality of Hanover is trying to decide whether to split the responsibilities of its Fire Chief and Facility Manager.

In April of 2015, Paul Wiebe was named Fire Chief for Hanover. Then, in November of that same year, Wiebe also took on the responsibility of Facility Manager for Hanover.

(Paul Wiebe)Reeve Stan Toews says this has worked out very well for the municipality.

"From the fire side, we now have one person looking after purchasing and stuff, so I think we're saving money there," says Toews. "Also on the facility coordinator, they catch things that need repair on our buildings and other assets before you have to make large repairs."

But Toews says council is considering splitting those two positions by July of 2018. He says as Fire Chief, Wiebe is getting busier and busier with calls as well as planning the construction of a new fire hall in the community of Blumenort. And as Facility Manager, Toews says there are more buildings to look after, which too is making his task busier.

He says splitting the positions does not come as a surprise. According to Toews, they knew when they gave Wiebe the role of Facility Manager that within a couple of years it might become more than part-time work.
