Council for the RM of Hanover is allowing a secondary suite to be built northwest of Kleefeld that is larger than what the municipality permits.

Eugen Schmidt appeared before council requesting permission to allow a secondary suite on 19 acres of land. The parcel is located along Road 35N, west of Road 25E.

In order for this to happen, Schmidt needed permission to vary the maximum size of a secondary suite from 800 square feet to 1360 square feet. Schmidt would like to build a bi-level home that is 1500 square foot, which would become the primary residence, while the existing 1360 square foot house would then become the secondary residence.

Schmidt told council the secondary suite would be used for his parents to live in.

Hanover Planning Manager Jeremy Neufeld says the affected property is near a Rural Residential development but is largely secluded, with few neighbours. He notes it is unlikely that a second residence would create conflict on this site.

"There was no concerns from neighbours and neither from council," says Deputy Reeve Bernie Stahn.

Council approved the request.
