The Southeast Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is searching for one more family for its Mitchell build.

In November of 2016, the organization announced that Mitchell would be the location for the next project. Since 2011, six homes have been built; two in La Broquerie, two in Richer and two in Grunthal. Those two in Grunthal were completed in late fall of 2015.

(Site of future build in Mitchell)When Mitchell was announced as the next build, it was also stated that construction would hopefully start in August of 2017 and be complete by this October or November. The side-by-side will go up on the lot at the corner of Oakview Avenue and Elm Street.

It is now spring of 2018, and Angele Bernardin, who chairs the Family Selection Committee says the only thing that has happened on that site is that a well has been dug. She says they did have two families in place, but one family fell through and now they are on the hunt again.

Yet, Bernardin says the delay isn't all bad. Constructing the side-by-side will cost Habitat For Humanity about $260,000. She notes today they are about $60,000 short of meeting that goal. Bernardin says the delayed start will not put a damper on future builds, and it also gives them more time to raise the necessary funds.

Any family hoping to qualify must be willing to partner with Habitat For Humanity. There is also a salary requirement, depending on the size of the family and Bernardin says they must provide 500 hours of sweat equity either on the home or in the community. They also must attend an information session planned for April 5th at 7 pm at Steinbach Arts Centre.

Bernardin says they haven't given up hope on finding a second family. She says if that doesn't happen they may decide to change plans, but says that would further delay the project.

According to Bernardin, the goal is to break ground once it thaws. She says these projects typically take about 12 months to build, noting they need to give enough time for the family to put in the necessary volunteer hours.
