Spring has sprung and local greenhouses are busy seeding to have flower and vegetables ready for planting.

Sunshine Greenhouse owner Dorinda Penner says about a week ago they planted varieties including peppers, onions, and pansies. She adds homeowners can also start planting those items along with herbs and shallots, however, she would recommend holding off on planting things like tomatoes for a couple more weeks.

"[Otherwise], they're going to end up wanting to stretch and look for light in your house and they're going to be a lot larger than you want them to be, say, by the end of May when we can guarantee that we're going to put them outside."

As for other product varieties, she notes they partner with other greenhouses who start seeding earlier. Penner says home-grown vegetables are becoming more common among the younger generation, which is great to see.

"We really love to see the growth of our younger generation getting involved in veggies. Even some of our baby boomers, as they're moving to smaller locations, they're still loving the fact of having a small container garden and having some veggies or herbs in there."

When it comes to yard maintenance, Penner says the grass may be showing in areas but it's best to not do any raking or thatching until late April or early May because the roots are currently too weak and working the yard could permanently damage the lawn.

Sunshine Greenhouse opened on Monday and Oakridge Garden Centre's Tropical House has already opened as well.
