Steinbach fire crews were called to a grass fire Thursday afternoon along Highway 12, south of the city.

The fire was burning near Road 33 North, which is about half a mile south of city limits.

Chief Kel Toews says a resident had started a fire in a rusted through burn barrel. Sparks left the barrel and started nearby grass on fire. Toews adds firefighters were able to extinguish it fairly quickly.

He says there were no injuries.

The call came down shortly before 2 pm.

Toews says he would not recommend anyone start a fire in these windy conditions.
