Manitoba Legislative AssemblySteinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen says Members of the Manitoba Legislature are adjusting to change. The fall sitting of the Legislature began one week ago and for the first time in about two decades, there are three official parties. A fourth Liberal member was elected during a summer byelection giving them four MLAs, the minimum requirement for official party status. Goertzen, who is Government House Leader, in addition to being the Minister of Education and Training, says it is a significant change.

"We were unique in Manitoba for the last two decades in that we had only two recognized political parties so it is relatively new for us again, for all of us who haven't had the experience of that. But really, the systems of the Legislature go along as they were before. You have as many questions in Question Period as you had before, you have as many speakers as you had before during the debate, they are just sometimes different speakers now with maybe a little bit of a different perspective because the Liberals will bring their own perspective to things. That's not a bad thing. I think it's good for democracy. It's just a matter of making sure that we all get used to the new normal. And we will and I think it will happen pretty quickly."

Meanwhile, he says the Conservative Government will be bringing forward some new legislation this fall that deals with agriculture and public safety. Goertzen adds they will also complete debate on some bills introduced in the spring, such as one that would end the practice of night hunting.
