A significant expansion planned for Mitchell Middle School is already generating feelings of anticipation.

“It’s exciting to see that there is forward-thinking on the part of the provincial government,” says Principal AJ Neufeld. He is, of course, referring to the recent provincial education funding announcement that granted an amount of up to 10 million dollars to the Hanover School Division to be used on his building. “It is nice to see the infrastructure matching the growth that we are seeing.”

The four-classroom addition is similar to one completed at the neighbouring Mitchell Elementary School just a matter of months ago. Neufeld says MMS has been grown by 15 to 20 students every year for the past four years and that number is only trending upwards as more and more elementary students graduate.

While the government has offered no precise timeline, the construction will be completed sometime in the next five years. By Neufeld’s reckoning, that will be just moments before their need becomes dire.

“Our staff is pleased to know that our space is suddenly going to expand to meet the need in advance.”
