A tiny fire outside Keystone Cinema Thursday morning disturbed what would have otherwise been a fairly typical day at Happy Feet Daycare.

“We were having bike and scooter day and the children were playing outside the movie theatre,” explains Lisa Greenberg, an Early Childhood Educator for Happy Feet, “then, some of them saw a spark!”

The kids quickly became mesmerized by what they later described as three-inch tall flames shooting from the sign. Greenberg says the Steinbach Fire Department was called immediately and her staff directed the kids out of harm’s way.

For the firefighters, the situation was nothing, simply a blown fuse in an outdoor fluorescent lightbulb. To the young onlookers though, it was something amazing.

“The fact that they saw what happened and watched the firefighters… the children are absolutely thrilled,” laughs Greenberg. “They will be talking about it for weeks to come!”

Before the firefighters left, Assistant Fire Chief Russ Reimer took time to explain what had happened to the children. Greenberg says that gesture was much appreciated.
