The Fire Chief for the Rural Municipality of Hanover says they are planning a public meeting for next month in Blumenort to discuss construction of the new fire hall.

In September of last year, council decided to pursue plans for a fourth fire hall in the municipality. The decision was made to build that hall in the community of Blumenort. Reeve Stan Toews announced at the time that the hall would probably be similar in size to the one in Grunthal. He stated approximately fifteen volunteer firefighters would be needed and that the cost to build the hall, purchase equipment and train firefighters would be about $2.6 million.

That was four months ago. Hanover Fire Chief Paul Wiebe says since then they have nearly completed the conceptual design, which should be finished in the next couple of weeks. They are also working on budgetary pricing.

The plan is to hold a public meeting at Blumenort School on February 15th at 7 pm. Wiebe says it is there they hope to present the numbers in terms of the financial implications to residents. They will also discuss construction plans and what's needed in terms of equipment.

Then, on March 1st, also at the school, they will hold a recruitment information meeting, beginning at 7 pm. Wiebe says once that is complete they will go through the hiring process and Wiebe says by September they hope to begin training some of the new recruits.

Wiebe notes if everything goes according to plan, they will prepare for the tendering process later this year, in order to begin construction in 2018. He says the hall will go up along Penner Drive, south of Granny's. Construction of the building should take between six and eight months. Wiebe says once all of the plans are approved, they can begin ordering equipment. He notes a truck itself can take up to one year to build.
