The Steinbach Fire Department attended a roof fire at Granny's Poultry in Blumenort Monday afternoon.

Fire Chief Kel Toews says the building was evacuated by the time they arrived.

“We were called in shortly after 4:30 P.M. to a fire on the roof at Granny’s. When we arrived, the building was charged with smoke and the fire was in the roofing. There was no flame at the time when we got there so we had to peel back the roofing and find the seed of the fire.”

Toews they were able to contain the fire to the roof on the north side of the building. He says there were some repairs being done to the roof Monday afternoon and they suspect that is what caused the fire. He notes smoke damage to the product inside Granny's will most likely be the largest cost.

Toews adds he believes all of the staff were sent home.

The New Bothwell and Giroux Fire Halls also responded to the fire to provide backup.
