Emergency crews attended a fatal multi-vehicle collision Sunday morning on Highway 1 near Ste. Anne.

A 38-year-old male from the Shoal Lake area has died after being struck by an eastbound semi pulling two trailers. RCMP say the collision happened at about 6:10 am after a 42-year-old female driver of a pickup truck pulling a boat trailer heading east stopped to help the 38-year-old male whose pickup was stuck in the ditch.

RCMP note, early investigation reveals the male driver was standing next to the pickup with the boat trailer that was blocking the driving lane on Highway 1, when a 70-year-old male driver of an eastbound semi tried to take evasive measures to avoid a collision. The semi driver attempted to take the shoulder when it hit the back of the pickup truck as well as the male driver of the stuck pickup truck and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female driver of the pickup from the RM of Ste. Anne, the 70-year-old male driver of the semi-truck from Quebec, as well as his 38-year-old male passenger, were not injured in the collision.

An RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist and the RCMP Criminal Crash Investigative Team are assisting with the ongoing investigation. The westbound lanes of Highway 1 were closed for about four hours and traffic was detoured through the Town of Ste. Anne.
