There are changes coming to the Canada Summer Jobs Program.

As you may recall, earlier this year the Liberal government voted in favour of adjusting the criteria for qualifying for funding. Organizations had to check a box on the form, indicating they support reproductive rights such as abortion.

2018 10 ted falk(Provencher MP Ted Falk)Provencher Member of Parliament Ted Falk says the Minister has now announced that she is withdrawing the attestation from the Canada Summer Jobs Program application.

"As Conservatives, we're very pleased that the Liberal government listened to us and to all Canadians indeed that were concerned with a values test that was ascribed to them through the attestation," says Falk.

According to Falk, the attestation was a huge deal for constituents of Provencher. In fact, he says this riding had the highest number of rejected applications due to an incomplete application, the result of organizations not completing the attestation.

"From daycares to camps to soup kitchens to lots of different organizations, even some municipalities said that they had issue with signing the attestation, just as a matter of principle," recalls Falk. "So right across our riding, we saw people that really struggled with it."

As of Thursday afternoon, Falk says he has yet to see the changes in writing.

"I'm cautiously optimistic that the new application will be something that's going to be acceptable to the majority of the people," says Falk. "We will obviously look at it very closely to make sure it is what she says it is and that the attestation is removed."

Falk says there is some indication there will still be a values test ascribed, but that it will be targeted to the kinds of jobs and positions they do not want to fund.
