A 20-year-old male from Kleefeld has died following a two-vehicle collision between a cement truck and minivan at the intersection of Highway 52 and Industrial Road around 12:30 p.m. Friday.

"We believe right now the 46-year-old driver was the father of the passenger who passed away. He is still in hospital with serious injuries, stable but serious,” says RCMP Sergeant Paul Manaigre. “At this point we believe everyone was wearing seat belts. Alcohol and speed were definitely not factors."

Manaigre says the collision is still under investigation but he does not anticipate any charges will be laid.

Steinbach Assistant Fire Chief Russ Reimer says it appears the cement truck was traveling westbound when it struck a minivan pulling a trailer north across Highway 52 on Industrial Road. He notes there were two occupants in the minivan and extrication was required.

"The extrication was difficult due to the size of the truck. The cement truck was embedded in the van so our crew did an amazing job of stabilizing the vehicle and then working together with the jaws and the driver of the cement truck, we were able to get it disentangled from the van in one rapid motion to get the patient out of the vehicle."

Reimer says the driver of the cement truck was checked by paramedics and was uninjured. He reminds drivers to remain cautious at the intersection of Highway 52 and Industrial Road.

"Once again this is our number one accident spot in Steinbach so people really need to be careful because this has been a more serious accident today."

Highway 52 West from Lund Road to Keating Road and Industrial Road from Highway 52 to Acres Drive were reopened to traffic shortly before 4 p.m.
