DSFM is nearing the end of a battle with bed bugs at Camp Moose Lake.

The francophone school division purchased the camp from Mennonite Church Manitoba in 2017.

Assistant Superintendent Rene Dequier says they discovered the issue in October when some students and staff reported they had bed bug bites while at one of the division's camps. He notes at that point they quickly jumped on the issue and feels it is being well taken care of.

"We have worked hard with professional exterminators so we've got a good handle on the situation," Dequier adds.

Dequier says on top of extermination, they have also done renovations to the cabins, for example changing the carpet, in order to make them easier to clean and less susceptible to bed bugs.

"We've certainly pulled all the stops to make sure that everything that we could do in terms of exterminating the pests are there and even renovating to make sure that there is less chance that bed bugs are there," he says, "I mean, as I say, in public spaces it's always a possibility but we're sure putting everything into place to make sure that we've eliminated all chances."

He adds in the meantime, they have had to rent other camps in southern Manitoba to facilitate their events but says they were also fortunate enough to have a stretch where there were no camps previously planned.

Dequier says Camp Moose Lake should be back up and running as per usual by the end of this month.
