It was not a good day for at least one driver who passed through an RCMP check-stop in Steinbach on Monday.

Police say one of the drivers had difficulty finding his registration and the license he handed over to the officer was not his. RCMP add the license plate did not belong to that vehicle either. Upon further investigation, police determined the vehicle had been stolen and the driver was in possession of counterfeit money, break-in tools and drug paraphernalia.

RCMP say 38-year-old Cory Couture from Winnipeg was arrested and will be facing several charges ranging from identity fraud, driving while disqualified, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of counterfeit currency and possession of break-in instruments.

Police say over 300 vehicles were checked on Highway 12 in Steinbach Monday afternoon. Two warnings were also issued for Highway Traffic Act offenses.

RCMP say the Holiday Checkstop Program focuses on assessing the sobriety of drivers as well as looking out for other high-risk infractions. Police also note spontaneous check-stops also act as a deterrent for drivers who are not currently under the influence of alcohol or a drug but may be at a later time and need to make the right decision before getting behind the wheel.
