At 3:30 Sunday morning someone called 9-1-1 after noticing a fire at Steinbach Regional Secondary School.

Construction is currently underway at the school to install a new elevator and Steinbach Fire Chief Kel Toews says the hoarding around the project, including a wood frame and tarping, were on fire. Toews notes there was minimal damage to the hoarding and no damage to the school.

"Subsequently, through the elevator shaft, smoke entered into the school and the basement, and the main floor had quite a bit of smoke. So, we spent some time ventilating and getting the smoke out of the building."

Toews adds, though there was smoke in the school, the alarms did not go off.

He says initial reports indicate it was the heating equipment inside the hoarding which started the fire.
