Calling them unsafe and inefficient, Steinbach city council wants Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation to fix the traffic signals on Highway #12 at Clearsprings Road. Mayor Chris Goertzen says there are times when traffic on Highway #12 is forced to stop even though there are no vehicles waiting to come off of Clearsprings Road and other times when traffic is waiting a long time on Clearsprings to get a green light. In fact, Deputy Mayor John Fehr says he has waited up to eight minutes on Clearsprings Road, waiting for the light to turn green.

Goertzen says the city has received numerous complaints as well.

"We've identified the problem and we've heard that from citizens. We've forwarded that information to Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation. We want to see action on this because it's not only unsafe, but it's inefficient. The lights are changing when they don't need to change necessarily and, sometimes, are not changing when they do need to change. The reality is the technology there (traffic sensor system) is not the current technology so I think we need MIT to examine that technology and whether there should be improvements made."

Goertzen says city council has sent a letter to MIT to ask them to fix the problem.
