Steinbach city council is putting the funding into place to rebuild part of Elmdale Street next year. The street will be reconstructed from just west of Barkman Avenue to Kroeker Avenue. At city council's meeting Tuesday night, Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra moved approval of a bylaw regarding the financing of the project.

"Elmdale is one of our older parts of the city and we have had a longstanding emphasis on renewing our infrastructure and as we know, it's expensive. But it's important to do. The total cost of the project is just over $1 million. This (bylaw) is specifically so we can have the borrowing authority of $700,000 that we will do over a five year period and the majority of the remainder of the cost will be covered from our Capital Development reserves."

Zwaagstra says the project includes the replacement of all the underground water and sewer infrastructure and that is part of the reason the cost is so high for just over one block of the roadway. There will also be some re-design work required to make it consistent with the previous reconstruction of other parts of Elmdale.

Councillor Jac Siemens, who seconded the motion, noted that this is the final piece of the reconstruction of Elmdale.

Council was unanimous in its approval of the bylaw.
