Steinbach city council had a discussion this week on the issue of home daycare operations. Rachel Friesen, who lives along Wyndham Estate Drive, wrote a letter to council saying the Provincial Early Childhood Coordinator for the southeast region had approved her for a 12-space daycare. But she notes Steinbach's Zoning Bylaw does not allow her to have more than seven spaces. That is the current limit in areas that are zoned 'Residential Single Family'.

Councillors asked chief administrator Troy Warkentin why the number was set at less-than-eight in that zoning category and not higher. Warkentin replied, "My understanding would be that it was not a requirement that was being sought at that time."

Councillor John Fehr suggested city council consider changing that rule when it reviews the Zoning Bylaw next year.

Councillor Susan Penner agrees.

"I am a mother who is just coming out of having to have childcare. Numerous mothers want that home-based daycare versus a more formal daycare. I personally see no issue, if someone is approved for 12 spaces, why our Zoning Bylaw does not. So, I would like us to review that."
