A resident of Steinbach has asked city council to improve accessibility at the aquatic centre. In a letter, Chrystie Kroeker Boggs, says her daughter has cerebral palsy and swimming is one of the few physical activities she can fully participate in alongside her peers. Kroeker Boggs says while she appreciates that both indoor pools at the aquatic centre are accessible for her daughter, who uses a wheelchair, the hot tub and outdoor pool are not.

Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra agrees with Kroeker Boggs that this needs to change.

"Accessibility is absolutely important within our city. The letter raised an essential issue. The issue is this; that the indoor pool does have a lift so that there is wheelchair access but the outdoor pool and the hot tub do not have lifts and so that makes it very challenging for someone who has mobility issues to get into those parts of our facility. We've asked our staff to look at some options and present us with some recommendations."

Zwaagstra says it is very important that Steinbach be an inclusive city and since the aquatic centre is a key recreation facility, it needs to be fully accessible.

City council has agreed to ask the administration to prepare a report on the matter with recommendations on how to make this happen.
