Steinbach city council has approved an agreement with Manitoba Hydro to install three street lights at the corner of Old Tom Road and Park Road. Councillor Jake Hiebert this week moved approval of the resolution.

"As we all know, this intersection is becoming a very busy one, mostly traffic, not a lot of pedestrians. But obviously it's sort of out in the country on the edge of town, it's very important to have lighting in that area so I think it's a good move."

Councillor Bill Hiebert seconded the motion.

"I've heard from residents that it's a very dark corner so it's dangerous without lights. This I think this is awesome and we should approve it."

Council gave unanimous approval to the resolution.

Mayor Earl Funk says this is just the start of plans to improve safety in that area.

"This is a good start to lighting up that road and it's the first step in improving that entire area, as far as lighting and bringing some safety to it. Hopefully, this does build some good faith with the residents there and shows that we are working towards a better result there."

Funk notes the administration will present a report to city council at its summer study session on proposals and costs to improve pedestrian access for the Clearspring Greens neighbourhood.
