Steinbach City Councillor Michael ZwaagstraSteinbach RCMP are reporting a raft of car thefts in the Southeast over the August Long Weekend.

Staff Sergeant Harold Laninga says one vehicle was stolen this past Thursday and three vehicles were stolen on Saturday. He notes two of the four were in Mitchell and the other two were stolen in Steinbach, adding these are unusually high numbers for the Steinbach area.

“I have checked and we have had 30 vehicles stolen so far this year in our entire area, so that is the City of Steinbach and the five RMs that we police. That is averaging less than four per month and now we have had four in one weekend so this is very unusual,” says Laninga, “two of the vehicles were taken from the same property so that would be unusual in itself.”

Steinbach City Councillor Michael Zwaagstra says the two vehicles stolen from Steinbach were both taken from his home.

“One of our sons was having a sleep out with a friend outside on our deck in a tent and because of that, we had left a side door unlocked because we wanted to make sure our son could get back in if necessary. I woke up the next morning, I went to the garage, opened the door and was absolutely shocked to find that my car was gone and then I saw that our other vehicle was gone.”

Zwaagtra says after looking around, they discovered the thieves had entered the house and stolen the spare keys for both vehicles while they slept. He notes his family is a little shaken but the police have done and excellent job and have been able to locate both of their vehicles. He adds the community has been very supportive with more than one of his fellow councillors reaching out to offer interim vehicles.

Laninga says the two recovered vehicles are still being examined and the RCMP is still searching for the remaining two vehicles which were both stolen from Mitchell. He says anyone with information regarding any of these thefts are encouraged to contact the Steinbach RCMP detachment or Crimestoppers.
