The City of Steinbach has purchased another home along Barkman Avenue near Elmdale Street. Councillor Cari Penner this week moved approval of the purchase.

"The purchase of 316 Barkman for $150,000 I think is a fair market value. I'm satisfied with that. It also supports our strategy to purchase land around the Elmdale area around the T.G. Smith Centre."

Council was unanimous in approving the purchase.

Chief Administrative Officer Troy Warkentin says the older home will either be moved off the site or demolished.

Mayor Chris Goertzen says the city now owns all three properties along Barkman Avenue between Elmdale and the back lane to the north.

"We have had a long term strategy of accumulating properties along this stretch near our recreation facility. This is an ongoing goal over the last 15-20 years. I think it's important that this final piece of the puzzle does bring this to an end along this stretch."

That area is part of the location for the proposed Steinbach Performing Arts Centre.
