Steinbach RCMP arrested three impaired drivers last month as part of its Holiday Checkstop Program.

The program ran from December 1st to January 1st. During that period, there were 17 checkstops within the Steinbach detachment and 911 vehicles were stopped.

Police report three impaired drivers were arrested and charged, there were three driving suspensions, 16 charges under the Highway Traffic Act and five charges under the Liquor and Gaming Control Act.

By comparison, during the same period one year earlier, there were 26 checkstops within the Steinbach detachment and 1,516 vehicles were checked. There were two Criminal Code Impaired Driving charges.

Province-wide last month, 8,333 vehicles were checked during 176 checkstops. A total of 117 people were charged with a Criminal Code Impaired Driving offence and there were 51 alcohol-related suspensions.

Last month in Manitoba there was one traffic-related fatality, compared to six during the same period one year earlier.
