Both companies considered for a cannabis retail store in Niverville have opted out.

Both Red River Co-op and Alberta-based Canna Cabana have altered their intentions in the town.

Chief Financial Officer of Canna Cabana Rahim Kanji says that delays in acquiring permission to open shop caused them to reconsider their strategy.

“We had a location in mind,” shares Kanji, “but we couldn’t maintain that location until that decision was reached and the landlord had given another tenant occupancy.”

The decision coming in the form of a plebiscite regarding the allowance of recreational cannabis sales in the community. Prior to the vote, Council was split in their decision and the delay began wearing on.

“We just felt this was a business line, the cannabis line, was something that we have no working knowledge of,” says Chief Executive Officer Doug Wiebe.

“We really wouldn’t have a lot of expertise to draw upon so we thought it was best to stick to our knitting, so to speak, and stay with our existing core line business, that being, food, pharmacy, and petroleum.”
