A spokesperson from Canna Cabana says the cannabis plebiscite in Niverville should clear up a lot of uncertainty for them.

On Tuesday, Niverville Town Council called a plebiscite to give residents the opportunity to decide whether or not to allow retail cannabis in the community. The vote will take place on November 26th.

Nick Kuzyk is the Chief Strategy Officer of Canna Cabana’s Calgary based parent company High Tide Inc. He notes the plebiscite will give them a firm answer, but the timeline is disappointing.

"I understand that council had a number of options available to it and this was the one that was selected and it gives a chance for the town to speak and have a voice and reflect its unique nature. Unfortunately, a November time frame is disappointing but it is what the town has decided and we will see what the outcome is."

As per the elections act, any plebiscite that is called must take place at least 90 days after being called so that is can be properly advertised.

Kuzyk says Canna Cabana is very focused on community education and they are willing to continue engaging with anyone who is on the fence about this type of decision. He notes they understand that it can take time for a community to warm up to the idea of recreational cannabis.

"When alcohol retail came to the town, I understand it was a similar reaction and situation so this is familiar territory for the residents and they are treating it in the same way, so that is respected and hopefully, fingers crossed, they grow more comfortable with it over the next couple of months."
