A young baseball player from Blumenort will be taking her talents to Southern California next week. Kennedy Toews is one of only three Canadian girls selected to take part in the Trailblazer Series.

Last year, USA Baseball and Major League Baseball launched this event for girls. It takes place in Los Angeles and will involve about 100 athletes. The girls will receive baseball instruction from the US Women's National Team, take part in a tournament and have the opportunity to attend an LA Dodgers game at Dodger Stadium on Jackie Robinson Day.

(Kennedy Toews takes batting practice)Toews' father Rob filled out the application for his 13-year-old daughter about two months ago. Then, in March, he received notification that Kennedy had been chosen.

"It's pretty crazy to think that I was the one to get in," says Toews.

Toews has been making the transition from fast pitch to baseball. In the past, she has played softball with the Eastman Wildcats but this year she plans to play with the Blumenort boys team and try out for the Carillon Sultans. Her future is uncertain.

"I'm not quite sure yet what I want to do in the future," says the Blumenort teen. "I just want to play baseball and have fun."

But Toews realizes the Trailblazer Series could be a springboard for a future in sports.

"I think definitely this could change things in the future," she says. "I might want to change my mind and try to get into school or something for sports."

Toews says she is most looking forward to seeing how her skill level compares to 13-year-old girls in the US.

Accompanying Toews down south will be her father and grandfather. Rob says he probably won't see much of his daughter while they are down there because of the busy schedule. He says he is excited for the opportunity his daughter has to make friends with girls from across the US.

"It will be just a really neat bonding experience for her," he says.

And while Toews says there is a chance this opportunity could open new doors for his daughter, he also acknowledges that girls baseball is still relatively new. Toews says the Trailblazer Series was started in an effort to get more girls involved in the sport.

The Trailblazer Series is scheduled around Jackie Robinson Day. On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play a Major League Baseball game. Seventy-one years later, MLB teams recognize April 15th as Jackie Robinson Day. The Toews family will be in attendance at Dodger Stadium on April 15th when the legacy of Jackie Robinson is honoured.
