The Fire Chief for Hanover says by the end of December, the new fire hall should be complete at Blumenort.

Paul Wiebe says right now it is about 85 per cent finished. He says they were hoping to take it over by the end of November, but there have been some delays which have been out of their control. Yet, Wiebe says it still looks like they will be able to stay within their budget.

Even though the hall is expected to be ready before the new year, Wiebe says their trucks and firefighting equipment are only scheduled to arrive in spring and so they are targeting late June or early July to become operational.

To date, the Blumenort Fire Department has 16 volunteer firefighters. Wiebe is hoping to get that number up to 18 or 20 and says they would like to add at least two volunteers next year. The firefighters all have their Level 1 training. Wiebe notes they will do their HAZMAT and vehicle extrication training this winter.

Meanwhile, once the Blumenort hall is operational, the Kleefeld department will be taking over coverage of the Mitchell area from Steinbach. Wiebe notes they would love to recruit some members from Mitchell for the Kleefeld department.
