Steinbach housing starts have rebounded in a big way this year. Through the first three quarters of the year, there have been 174 housing starts compared to 50 all of last year and 94 the year before. Mayor Chris Goertzen notes there were 36 starts in September alone, including 12 single family homes and 24 multi-family units.

"This has been a great month of September. We had quite a number of housing starts, both multi-family as well as single-family homes. We have a lot of people wanting to move to our city with over 174 housing starts so far this year. We expect October, November and December will continue to have a good number of starts. This is going to be a banner year for Steinbach and the growth that we're seeing."

Goertzen says the growth is due to people moving here from Winnipeg and other Manitoba locations as well as from other parts of Canada and around the world. Housing starts this year are getting back to where they were from the years of 2010 to 2012 when they were in the range of 250 per year.
