A bear that ran around Steinbach Monday and Tuesday has been captured and removed from the community.

The black bear, estimated to be about 18 months old, was first spotted Sunday by residents along Keating Road. Then Monday, a driver saw it run across Highway #12 and up Friesen Avenue. He notified police and when they arrived on scene, the bear was asleep on the roof of a garage.

RCMP say Conservation Officers arrived around 3:00 p.m. and shot the animal with a tranquilizer dart. But the bear responded by running up a tree. It finally came down and was captured around 7:30 p.m. The officers put the bear into a cage and took it out of the city.
