After a rocky month of medical complications, travel, and three life-saving surgeries, a family from Steinbach is finally reunited in their own home.

Declan was born to Mike and Jasmine Burnard on January 18th. Mike says everything was going smoothly and they had returned home from the hospital when their midwife noticed Declan had a very low blood-oxygen level during a routine check-up. He says Declan was brought to Bethesda Hospital and after some tests, was transported to Winnipeg by ambulance.

Burnard says following the ambulance with their newborn son onboard was a long and quiet ride. He notes after further tests in Winnipeg, they finally found out what was wrong.

"We had a meeting with this doctor and she said, 'I am a cardiologist and I would like to talk to you about your son.' She began to explain to us that Declan has something called transposition of the greater arteries which is basically the two arteries at the top of his heart have been swapped so the blood that was going into his different chambers, it wasn't coming and going to the right area."

athing and drawn out the recovery process. He says in the last month he and his wife Jasmine have been through some of the most extreme ups and downs they have ever experienced but through it all the support has been overwhelming.

"We received so much support from our community, we had family in Edmonton and friends which was phenomenal and then people back at home, there were literally tens of thousands of people who prayed for our son and hundreds and hundreds of people who reached out in support."

Burnard says they have also received financial support through a GoFundMe set up by a friend to cover some of their additional costs over the last month.

Just this last week, Mike, Jasmine, Silas, and Declan were all able to return home together for good.

Burnard says even though the road to full recovery is still long, he wants to thank everyone who has supported and prayed for them thus far.
