La Broquerie Firefighters were called to an unusual case of arson Thursday afternoon.

“Four bales fell off of a trailer and somebody lit two of them on fire,” states Fire Chief Al Nadeau. He indicates that firefighters were called to the fire two miles east of Marchand along Highway 210, at 1:35 PM.

Nadeau says a four man firefighting crew was sent to deal with the situation. Rather than putting out the flames with water, the fire crew spread the burning hay around the snow until it was completely burnt up.

While it is not altogether uncommon for bales to fall out of trailers, Nadeau finds it odd that somebody would set them on fire. “I’m not sure why somebody would do that,” he questions.

According to Nadeau, no buildings or brush were threatened by the blaze and he notes crews were able to quickly gain control of the situation.
