Granger Street in La Broquerie will soon be the home of a new concrete sidewalk.

Reeve Lewis Weiss says the sidewalk is part of an ongoing effort to make the community's streets more pedestrian friendly.

“We’re building more and more sidewalks and walking paths throughout the area. If you do a little bit every year, eventually you get a lot done.”

While the addition of sidewalks is convenient for everyone, they are also part of La Broquerie's active transportation plan in order to promote physical activity in the community.

Meanwhile, Gäétan Bisson, Chair of the La Broquerie LUD, says this specific sidewalk is something residents in the area have been anticipating for a long while. “When we went through elections a couple of months ago that was one of the issues that popped up the most.”

The Granger Street area is one of the sections of La Broquerie that has seen the most development over the past ten years. Bisson notes this busyness has caused some safety concerns with pedestrian traffic.

“It's a busy street, and its the main street that is used to get out to the northwest corner of town. From a safety standpoint, this sidewalk is a big need.”

Weiss agrees that the area has seen incredible population growth for the past number of years. He says that the age demographic along Granger Street ranges between young families and retired seniors and notes the sidewalk would be well used by everyone.

In the 2019 Service Plan, the LUD has budgeted $108,980 for sidewalks and boulevards. Much of this funding will be directed towards this new sidewalk, and the remainder will be used for tree care and beautification elsewhere in the community.

The construction of the Granger Street sidewalk is scheduled to begin this summer.
