The 2022 Manitoba Games Powered by Manitoba Hydro, which were set to be held in Niverville, have been cancelled.

The announcement was made by Sport Manitoba and the Niverville Host Society Friday afternoon. The games were scheduled to run from February 27th to March 5th and would have had upwards of 1,500 participants and required over 1,000 local volunteers.

According to a release by Sport Manitoba and the Niverville Host Society "Over the last 18 months, inconsistencies in competition and training opportunities had an effect on athlete development. Without regular training, conditioning, and recovery routines in this crucial stage, the risk of injury, mental fatigue, and overtraining were also factors in making this decision."

Along with continued uncertainty about the pandemic, and public health restrictions, it became clear it would not be possible to host an event of this magnitude and execute a safe and successful multi-sport Games experience.

Niverville Mayor Myron Dyck says "I would have to say that obviously, I am disappointed by this decision, however, I am understanding of the games committee and why it was made."

Dyck notes this is not necessarily the end for Niverville.

"Sport Manitoba has been very understanding and it is much appreciated on their part to offer Niverville the 2026 games. I know that our games committee is contemplating that and there is a very good likelihood that this will just be pushed back a few years to 2026.”

The release by Sport Manitoba recognizes the hard work that the Niverville Host Society has put already put in. It then reads as follows: "To give them an opportunity to follow through on some of the benefits of hosting a Manitoba Games, Sport Manitoba is guaranteeing $150,000 for capital projects. Some projects, like the cross-country ski trails at Hespeler Park, have already benefited from this investment. The funds that remain will be allocated within the community to enhance sports infrastructure and equipment."

Co-Chairs of the Niverville Host Society Angela Janz and Chantal Todd add "To all who have been involved, we are truly grateful for being understanding of this tough but necessary decision. We say thank you to Sport Manitoba, Hanover School Division, to the Games sponsors, and to all the volunteers for your hard work to date. We truly are grateful and thankful for each of you."
