But not for long.

The 2018 golf season will come to an end at La Verendrye golf when the sun goes down this Sunday.

There's a chance golfers could enjoy near double-digit temperatures over the next five days which will seem quite balmy compared to the conditions we've experienced since autumn arrived - not counting last Thursday of course.

"There's not much we can do about it," said La Verendrye club manager Darren Dundas. "Mother Nature throws us what she wants to throw every year. It's definitely disappointing. I'm hoping we can get some decent weather."

There was an abundance of that decent weather in June, July and August.

"Summer was fantastic," Dundas said. "It was a little dry but we've got lots of irrigation to keep things green. Going into the fall we looked very good until mid-September and then the weather kind of changed on us. Other than that the year went fantastic for us."

Dundas adds the 18-hole layout in La Broquerie survived a second consecutive summer of extreme heat.

"Definitely in the rough where we're not irrigating it goes backward a little bit but we actually had timely rains this year. It was extremely dry by all means but we happened to have timely rains throughout the golf season so we were pretty green without too much extra work."

Late last month Dundas and his staff discovered that the green on their par five 13th hole suffered extensive damage when vandalized by an ATV.

"The guys did a fantastic job repairing it to begin with," said Dundas. "It's closed for the season obviously. We really don't know how it's going to turn out. The weather turned on us just after it happened. We'll determine how much damage was truly done in the spring time when we come out of winter. We're very fortunate we do have sod on hand so we were able to do most of the repairs in-house. Time will only tell how much damage was truly done to it."
