The Steinbach Regional fastpitch and baseball teams had a busy weekend at the Provincial High School Championships.

The Steinbach Regional Sabres fell short when Major Pratt of Russell doubled up on them 6-3 in the quarterfinals. SRSS coach Mandy Thiessen attributes this loss to a few key errors made late in the game, such as allowing runs to come in when they should've been a third out and hitting less at bat.

"Going into the next years we're only going to get stronger," Thiessen said.

The Stonewall Rams claimed victory after they outscored Portage Collegiate 12-8 in the final, ending the Saints' three-year run as provincial champions.

Over at Plumas and Neepawa was the boy's baseball championship. Steinbach Regional fell to Portage Collegiate in a close 5-4 game.

"It's both disappointing and something to be proud of at the same time. When you're so close to winning the whole thing it's a little disappointing when you fall short. Yet when we look back at our season a few days later we know it was a really good season and we achieved more than we expected when the season began," said SRSS coach Clint Brandt. "I'm extremely proud of these guys."

There were three Steinbach Regional Tournament All Stars recognized throughout the weekend, including Austin Friesen and Justin Gudmundson.
