Matthew Osadick scored three times as the Eastman Selects defeated the Winnipeg Wild 7-5 in their round robin finale at the 2017 Telus Cup West Regional “AAA” Midget Hockey Championship in Steinbach.

Any chance the host team and the Manitoba champions had of advancing to the championship game were dashed when the Selects and Wild lost back-to-back games to the Thunder Bay Kings and Regina Pat Canadians on Thursday and Friday at the T.G. Smith Centre.

So instead of playing for a spot in the Telus Cup, it was Manitoba bragging rights that were on the line.

"We discussed it as a team," said Osadick. "Go out, have fun and play hard. It's the Wild so it's always a good game against them."

Liam Grossman, Preston Seymour, Dallon Wilton and Joel Delorme also scored for the Selects who outshot the Wild 23-22.

"The boys were moving the puck well and passing a lot which we've been working on all year, trying to get them to stay wide," said Eastman head coach Dennis Senebald. "They really moved the puck well and Matty Osadick showed why I've been on him all year to shoot the puck. He's got an incredible shot."

The Selects finished the round robin with a 1-2 record.

Jesse Gibbons had a hat trick and Kyle Bettens had the other two goals for the Wild who were winless in three games.

Coach Senebald said the 2016-2017 season was memorable.

"We struggled the first part of the year. We knew with 14 new players it was going to take a while to buy into everything. The boys really turned it around the second half of the season and we were one goal away from going to the finals. Really proud of the boys the way they worked together and they've really come together as a team as the year went on."

Thunder Bay and Regina will meet in the championship game Sunday with the opening face-off at 2 p.m.

The Pat Canadians downed the Kings 7-2 Saturday afternoon.

Regina finished the round robin with a 3-0 record while Thunder Bay was 2-1.
