Game one ended just before 5 p.m. Friday.

Game two will start shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Eastman Selects have 24 hours to try and find a way to to keep their season alive.

The Manitoba Female AAA Midget Hockey League champions lost 7-0 to the Saskatoon Stars Friday afternoon at the T.G. Smith Centre in Steinbach.

MacKenna Parker and Grace Shirley scored two goals each for the Saskatchewan champions in game one of the best-of three Esso Cup West Regional series.

“Our team didn’t play terrible,” said Selects forward Samantha Christensen. “We just needed to move our feet more. We were panicking a lot with the puck and we were just giving it away a lot of the time.”

Kaitlin Jockims, Calli Arnold, and Jordan Gerlitz also scored for the Stars who need one more win to qualify for the 2018 Esso Cup in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.

Saskatoon goaltender Jordan Ivanco made 13 saves in recording the shutout.

“We weren’t used to the speed and I think we gave them a little bit too much credit,” said Eastman head coach Bill Bram. “Before you know it we were down 4-0 but the girls kept battling back and we never gave up. The last period they only got one. We saw what we’re up against now. We’ll regroup. The attitude is still good. We just got to work a little bit harder – winning the little battles.”

Eastman had two quality chances to get on the board late in game one but both Chelsea Dinnin and Hayley Johnson had their shots turned aside by Ivanco.

Selects netminders Raygan Kirk and Meagan Relf combined to make 36 saves.

Game two goes Saturday (5 p.m.) at the T.G. Smith Center and if game three is necessary it would be played Sunday.
