The Steinbach Regional Secondary School will represent Zone 13 at the Provincial High School Baseball Championship next week in Plumas & Neepawa.

The Sabres won three games Wednesday at Stahn Park in Mitchell.

The SRSS defeated Edward Schreyer School of Beausejour 16-3 in the B side final and then beat the A side champion Green Valley Pirates of Grunthal twice to claim the Zone banner.

"Three games in the heat and they brought the energy all day long. Very proud of them," said Sabres coach Clint Brandt.

Game one between Steinbach Regional and Green Valley was a blowout in favour of the SRSS.

The Sabres scored eight runs in the first inning off Pirates starter Ty Reimer en route to a 22-7 victory over last years Zone champions.

Game two was tied 1-1 until Green Valley plated four runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Steinbach Regional rallied in the fifth.

Justin Gudmundson sparked the comeback with a bases clearing double.

"We trust each other," said Gudmundson. "We never doubted that we couldn't win. We were down by four and rallied together, did our best, and it worked."

The Sabres tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and took the second game 9-6.

Green Valley ace Carson Epp, who delivered a three-run triple in the fourth and also tripled and scored the teams sixth and final run in the top of the seventh inning, did not make it to the mound Wednesday.

Epp, who struck out 14 when the Pirates beat the Sabres 9-0 in last years Zone final, was on the hill when Green Valley edged the SRSS 5-4 in the A side final Tuesday afternoon.

Pirates coach Jason Epp said the Sabres were solid at the plate.

"They hit the ball. That's a good team top to bottom. I'll be a little arrogant here and say with Carson - against anybody in the province - I'll take my chances any day. But in a two-game, three-game tournament you got to have depth. I thought Ty would have it for us but give them kudos, they hit the ball. They were on their game and full marks to them."

The Sabres are going to the Provincials for the fourth time in six years.

"This is my second time," said SRSS catcher Burke Heide. "It's great in my grade 12 year. The last chance I have at it."

Steinbach Regional lost two straight at the 2016 Provincial Championships in Winkler and coach Brandt explained why this years ball team might just take that extra base and qualify for the playoffs in Plumas & Neepawa.

"Our depth. We played five games in two days and everyone contributed. We'll need that out there as well. Pitching depth especially. Our bats were on fire this week and we hope that continues."

The 2018 Provincials will be held next week Thursday, Friday & Saturday.
