The Steinbach Pistons have their work cut out for them after falling 4-3 to the Virden Oil Capitals on Thursday night and now trail the Turnbull Cup Finals 2-0.

Prior to puck drop, there was a beautiful ceremony in support of the Humboldt Broncos. Both teams lined up along the bluelines accompanied by minor hockey players. Billets representing both franchises were met at centre ice along with local fire and emergency personnel, chaplains from both teams and league officials.

There were video tributes followed by a 16 second moment of silence.

Once the game got underway, the Pistons quickly grabbed a lead as Will Koop buried a loose puck after a Jack Johnson shot to give Steinbach a 1-0 lead just 1:12 into the game. It's Koop's second goal of the playoffs.

Both teams showed off good speed and had a couple of chances on the rush. Both teams also had a couple of power play opportunities but neither could convert so it remained 1-0 Steinbach after the first period.

In the second, the Pistons continued to play tight defence, not allowing Virden much time in the offensive zone.

Late in the frame, a harmless looking rush by the Oil Caps produced the tying goal as Graeme Hore bounced a puck off a Pistons players and into the net to knot the game 1-1 after two periods of play.

Virden thought they picked up the lead as the period came to a close, a point shot beat Thiessen but time had expired. After a brief conference by the officials, it was ruled that the puck didn't enter the net before time ran out so it was ruled no goal.

Things really opened up in the third.

Weak defensive zone play cost the Pistons when defender Tristen Cross was allowed to walk in from the blueline and bury a backhander upstairs past Matthew Thiessen to give Virden their first lead of the game.

Steinbach responded just over a minute later when a point shot from Mark Taraschuk was perfectly deflected by Johnson for his 2nd of the playoffs and made it a 2-2 hockey game.

Easton Bennett pushed the Pistons ahead with his second of the post-season when he ripped home a wrist shot to make it 3-2 Steinbach. Tanner Mole and Tyson McConnell had the assists.

The lead didn't last long as Virden roared back with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart.

First, a deflection off a point shot from Rylee Zimmer to make it 3-3 and then a deflection off a skate from Landyn Cochrane to give Virden the lead for good, 4-3.

The power play for Steinbach failed to gain any traction finishing 0-4 while the penalty kill was solid going 3-3.

The Pistons had the edge in shots 43-34. Matthew Thiessen was very good, making several key saves in close but was stuck with the loss.

Steinbach now trails the best of 7 series 2-0 heading back to Steinbach on Saturday night.
