Several Special Olympic athletes from the Southeast received a medal during the 2017 Provincial Summer Games this past weekend.

Gilbert Fehr competed in 5-pin bowling and says he was happy with his scores of 120, 135, 136, and 167. Fehr notes it was emotional to have his name called as the gold medal winner for this category.

"They did all the other awards first and then they did 5-pin awards. So, when they did 5-pin awards I was really, currently, actually on my feet standing and waiting. Then, of course, when they called my name I was bawling and tears."

Fehr says his mom was cheering him on Saturday and Sunday, adding she was very excited when he received the gold medal.

"Besides getting the medal, [my favourite part] I guess was just being with the other contestants and having fun, enjoying each other's friendship."

In 5-pin bowling Ryan Manaigre received gold and Tim Hiebert received bronze. In golf Dusty Buchan received a silver medal.

The Special Olympic Nationals take place next year in Nova Scotia.
