Four local cyclists have been recognized by the Manitoba Cycling Association for their outstanding performance this season.

After an eleven year hiatus from biking Jayne Enns started training in March and won every race throughout the riding season. Enns says she won in the mountain bike category for MTB Cup Winner, Top Female Rider as well as Award of Merit. She adds there is a group of individuals who look at everyone's results throughout the season and nominate those who qualify for each award.

"Then I ended up actually winning the award, which I had no idea the day of that I would be getting the Top Female Mountain Biker in the province."

She notes she enjoys biking because it's a challenge and sense of accomplishment.

"With any sport you get the endorphine rush and the fun that goes along with that. Also challenging your body and using a machine to go fast. You and your bike become one and you become a machine in yourself. Just being able to hop over logs and take rock gardents and different lines, it's a really good time."

Other cyclists from the Southeast who won an awards include Jonathan Thompson and Michelle Andres, winning Volunteer of the Year for mountain biking. She says, "they ended up getting this award because they're such a huge part of getting everything ready for the [2016 Power Smart] Manitoba Summer Games. Michelle also runs our Kids of Mud program."

Carson Thompson of Blumenort won a few awards. Thompson took the MTB Cup Winner and Top Young Male Rider for mountain biking, Top Young Male Rider for cyclocross as well as an Award of Merit. Enns notes, "he competed against men who were quite a bit older than him and far more experienced when it came to riding. He's a very talented athlete and very promising. I think he has a pretty bright future."

Enns says biking is a great sport for anyone and can provide a great source of exercise.
