The three-peat is on hold.

Jason Frykas scored his second goal of the game with 30 seconds left in regulation and Jon Lawrence potted the winner on the power play 3:36 into overtime as the Red Wings edged Ste. Anne 7-6 Thursday night in Grunthal.

That cuts the Aces lead in the Carillon Senior Hockey League's best-of-seven final to three games to two.

"We were kind of up and down all game and we had a couple of leads that we blew so when it came to overtime it's always just one shot," said Lawrence. "Jason (Frykas) made a nice pass and it was just a good deflection."

It took five games but the Red Wings finally outscored the defending champions in the first period.

Grunthal had a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes but the Aces scored three unanswered goals in the middle frame to grab a 4-3 lead.

Brody Kornelsen and Kyle Lundale scored 24 seconds apart early the third restoring the Red Wings one-goal lead.

Patrick Normandeau tied the game when he beat Caden Unger at 15:30 and Tanner Harms but the Aces up by one when he scored his second of the game with 2:18 remaining in regulation.

With Unger on the bench for an extra attacker, Frykas sent the game into overtime when he drilled a rebound past Ste. Anne goaltender Guy St. Vincent with 30 ticks left on the clock.

"I thought it was a really good game," said Aces captain Steph Pattyn. "They obviously came out with a good start which we expected. We battled back a few times and tied it up and regained the lead. We knew it was going to be quick come overtime so we were hoping that we'd get it. I thought it was a pretty cheap call but that's something we just have to take and try to kill but we're ready for game six."

That call in overtime was a two-minute minor to Ste. Anne forward Justin Tremblay who was deemed an ineligible player for participating in the play with an undone chinstrap.

Hockey Manitoba's rule book states
Rule 3.6 - Situation 1: If a player loses his helmet, facial protector, throat protector, or his chinstrap becomes undone while play is in progress, that player has two options:
1. Replace and properly fasten the piece of equipment before participating in the play.
2. Proceed to the players' bench and be substituted for.
If a player participates in play without the equipment properly secured, play shall be stopped immediately, regardless of which team is in possession of the puck and the offending player shall be assessed a minor penalty for "ineligible player".

Tremblay, Miguel Rondeau and Keith Grondin also scored for the Aces in game five.

Tim Plett and Gavin Froese had the other Grunthal goals.

Game six goes Sunday (2:30 p.m.) in Ste. Anne.

Red Wings captain Jeff Penner says they have to play with control if they want to have a chance to force a deciding seventh game back in Grunthal next Tuesday.

"If we keep our composure we're a good team but when we run around when goals are starting to move one way or another, we can lose our cool, and Ste. Anne will make us pay. We have to be careful with that."
