Steinbach Pistons forward Will Koop had two goals and an assist in the Pistons 7-1 win over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines on Wednesday night.

The Pistons jumped out to an early lead when Bradley Schoonbaert scored on the power play from Braden Purtill and Darby Gula to make it 1-0 just 1:23 into the first period. Schoonbaert has the team lead in goals with 13 so far this season.

At the midway point of the period, Drew Worrad scored his 5th goal in his 5th game. Tanner Mole and Brady Tatro had the assists on Steinbach's 2-0 goal.

Before the period was through, with the Pistons on another power play, Austin Heidemann notched his 6th of the year with Jaret Lalli and Will Koop getting the assists.

The first period came to an end with Steinbach up 3-0.

In the second, Tanner Mole notched his second of the year from Gula and Tatro.

Less than 3 minutes later, Tyson McConnell scored from Gula to make it a 5-0 hockey game. McConnell has five goals on the year.

Another break for Steinbach came when Koop bounced one off the pad of the Waywayseecappo goalie to make it 6-0. Heidemann and Lalli were given the assists on the final goal of the period.

In the third, both teams traded goals. Koop netted his second of the game from Schoonbaert and Worrad while Matthew Thiessen's shutout bid was broken by James Maxwell.

The game ended with Steinbach 7-1 winners.

Thiessen finished the night with 12 saves. The power play was on fire scoring twice on three opportunities while the penalty kill went three for four.

Head coach Paul Dyck liked what he saw from his team, for the most part. "We wanted a good start. The focus on tonight's game was to play well in our zone, pick up trailers into our zone, things we've been better at recently but we want to build on. We wanted to execute our game and play at a high rate of intensity and I thought we did that for the most part."

If there was something that the coach would like to clean up, it was at times his team got too fancy, something the staff addressed after the game. "We discussed it before the game and then after the second, you see guys toe dragging lines and then all of a sudden, the pucks going back the other way. We want to get those pucks deep and play with more speed. At times, we carried pucks when we had opportunities to advance it and it slows down the game a bit. Bad habits can creep in when you have a sizable lead, so it's something we had to keep an eye on through the game."

Will Koop's three-point effort gives him 17 on the season (5 goals, 12 assists) but he's quick to share the credit. "It's nice to get a couple goal but it's my linemates finding the open spots and it was just a great team effort tonight."

The same two teams will meet on Saturday night as the Pistons wrap up their 5 game homestand. So far, they are 3-1 during that stretch including three straight wins.

Saturday night's game will be on Mix 96 and SteinbachOnline.com with the pre-game show starting at 7:15 pm.
